Kitchen Porter
Location: Homeless Residential Service
Reports to: Kitchen Coordinator (Chef)
Hours: 22 hours per week
Job Purpose:
To support the Kitchen Coordinator and kitchen team by ensuring the kitchen is clean, organized, and functioning efficiently. The role involves assisting with food preparation, cleaning, stock management, and maintaining a high standard of hygiene in the kitchen environment, all while adhering to food safety standards.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
- Cleaning & Hygiene:
- Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, and appliances as needed.
- Ensure cleanliness of all kitchen areas, including floors, counters, and storage spaces.
- Dispose of waste correctly and assist with recycling.
- Maintain dishwashing and cleaning areas to a high standard.
- Food Preparation Assistance:
- Help prepare food ingredients and assist with meal preparation tasks under the guidance of the Kitchen Coordinator.
- Organize and prepare ingredients, including portioning and basic tasks like preparing salads.
- Stock Management:
- Assist with receiving deliveries and store food items properly.
- Help with stock rotation and ensure that food is used within its best-before dates.
- Report on stock levels to the Kitchen Coordinator and assist with stocktaking.
- Kitchen Operations:
- Support kitchen staff in setting up and packing down workstations.
- Ensure kitchen equipment is cleaned, organized, and maintained to avoid damage or malfunction.
- Health & Safety Compliance:
- Follow all health and safety protocols, ensuring kitchen practices meet food hygiene standards.
- Report any safety hazards or equipment faults to the Kitchen Coordinator.
- Maintain proper cleaning routines in accordance with health regulations.
- Other Duties:
- Other duties as assigned, including tasks in other areas of the service, as required
Person Specification
Essential:
- Basic understanding of food hygiene and health & safety standards.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Reliable and punctual with a positive attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision.
- Physically fit and capable of lifting heavy items and standing for long periods.
Desirable:
- Previous experience as a kitchen porter or in a similar role.
- Knowledge of stock management and food storage procedures.
- Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to take on a range of tasks.
- Awareness of the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals, with the ability to work sensitively within a supportive environment.
