GIS Technicians with the Breeding Waders EIP
The Breeding Waders EIP Project was officially launched at Shannon Harbour on Tuesday, May 22nd by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., alongside Minister for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan T.D., and Minister for Land Use and Biodiversity, Pippa Hackett T.D.
This exciting €25 million initiative aims to protect and restore Ireland’s most vulnerable breeding wader populations.
Co-funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the project falls under the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) Agri Programme. It focuses on conserving and boosting populations of species such as Curlew, Redshank, Lapwing, Snipe, Dunlin, Golden Plover, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper, and Red-necked Phalarope through comprehensive landscape management and policy development.
Ireland’s breeding wader populations have seen dramatic declines in both numbers and breeding range since the 1970s, with many species now facing the threat of extirpation or functional extinction. The project consists of an operational group led by Irish Rural Link in collaboration with Irish Wildlife Services, Michael Martyn Agri-Environment, the Hen Harrier Programme, Atlantic Technological University, University College Dublin, and the Zoological Society of Ireland.
The project team will establish connections with landowners, stakeholders and communities to foster a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of breeding waders within the landscape. 1. GIS Project Officer
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Must have a degree in GIS, geography, environmental studies, or related field with demonstrated capabilities in GIS.
- Proficiency with GIS desktop (ArcMap, ArcPro or QGIS) software and experience using web mapping systems (e.g. GIS cloud) are fundamental. A strong understanding of geodatabases and geodatabase applications is relevant for this position. Experience using Python, R, ModelBuilder, FME or another common GIS scripting language is also desirable, as job duties may include creating scripts to streamline frequently performed tasks.
- Experience with data analysis and interpretation.
- Strong communication skills are valued, as the position will require working closely with several organisations and provide training for team members. Experience using a CRM (e.g. Dynamics 365) is a plus.
Main responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of GIS databases and projects to be shared (and constantly updated) by different project partners. The candidate must also be able to develop customised GIS workflows and identify the best solutions for spatial data management.
Other responsibilities
- Maintain the developed web mapping project throughout the duration of the project.
- Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources.
- Communicate with project team members and other stakeholders to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs.
- Identify the best tools for field ecologists, farm advisors, surveyors and nest protection officers to a) collect field data; b) interact and interpret GIS projects and maps.

Hours of work: 38 per week
Salary: €60,000 pa
2. GIS Technician
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Previous experience with GIS desktop (ArcMap, ArcPro or QGIS) and relevant professional ecological experience is fundamental. Experience using a CRM (e.g. Dynamics 365) is a plus.
- Experience in ecology, ornithology, agri-environmental schemes is advantageous.
Main responsibilities:
- Regularly update and digitise data in a GIS web system.
- Support the GIS Project Officer with GIS project development and spatial data analyses.
- Provide training and support to project officers and farm advisors on GIS tools and software.
- Data quality control.
- Support ecological surveys and data collection when necessary.
Reporting to: Project Manager
Location: Main Office in Moate Co. Westmeath, this position will be flexible
Hours of work: 38 per week
Salary: €50,000 pa
