Term: Part-time post of Indefinite duration – subject to continued funding for the role.

Hours: Part-Time hours available

Location: Castlebar base, along with travel across the county for outreach, meetings, and training

Salary: €15 per hour

About Us: 

Mayo Traveller Movement (MTM) is an independent organisation committed to promoting equality and social justice for Travellers in County Mayo. Funded by the HSE (Health Service Executive) to support the implementation of the National Traveller Health Action Plan (NTHAP), we are actively encouraging applications from members of the Traveller community who are passionate about improving health outcomes and advocating for social justice, to join our team as PEER Community Health Project Workers. The roles are offered on a part-time basis.

This Peer-Led Primary Health Care Programme aims to support and empower Travellers in improving health and well-being within their own communities. As a member of our team, you will contribute to initiatives that reflect MTM's core values: Social Justice, Equality, Collectivity, Participation, and Dignity. We work collaboratively to promote development and create positive change across the wider factors that impact health.

The programme aims to improve Traveller's health and well-being by addressing key challenges and working towards lasting, positive change in the quality of life and social status of the Traveller community county Mayo.

Key Responsibilities of The Post

The main focus of this role is to support the implementation of the NTHAP in County Mayo, across the social determinants of health with a specific focus on Wellbeing. This role will include outreach to households, linking with services, and representation at local and regional meetings.

Key areas of work:

  • Enable and empower meaningful Traveller representation through the active participation of the Traveller community in the decision making
  • To support the delivery of an outreach programme, including administration tasks
  • Understand wellbeing services and how to access them
  • Develop culturally appropriate wellbeing messages for the Traveller community
  • Signposting to additional supports when required
  • Promote the provision of culturally appropriate services
  • Promote the Right to Health and human rights-based approaches to getting results for the Traveller community
  • Enable meaningful Traveller participation on key committees, where Traveller representation should contribute to positive change
  • To participate in regional training for the post as required
  • To prepare reports and adhere to reporting requirements required by HSE and MTM
  • Any other duties deemed necessary by Management.

Essential Requirements:

  1. To demonstrate good verbal and written communication, interpersonal and group work skills
  2. Demonstrate the ability to work independently as a lone worker and collaboratively as part of a team.
  3. Good Computer skills
  4. Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  5. Experience working with the Traveller community
  6. A good understanding of issues impacting the Traveller Community
  7. An understanding of health issues impacting the Traveller Community
  8. Access to a car for work with a Full Driver's Licence

Person Specification

  1. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with individuals, families, and professionals.
  2. Experience in delivering culturally appropriate health and well-being messages.
  3. Ability to represent the Traveller community in meetings, ensuring their voices are heard.
  4. Understanding of the key health and well-being challenges facing the Traveller community.
  5. Confidence in advocating for Travellers' health rights and challenging discrimination where necessary.
  6. Ability to promote a human rights-based approach to health and well-being.
  7. Willingness to share knowledge and contribute to team goals.
  8. Strong organisational and IT skills to coordinate activities and maintain accurate records.
  9. Proactive approach to identifying barriers to service access and finding solutions.
  10. Full driving licence and access to a car for work-related travel.
  11. Willingness to travel across County Mayo for outreach, meetings, and training.
