Temporary Drug Education Worker (17.5 hours per week for 3 months)

The Canal Communities Regional Addiction Service (CCRAS) is a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) with charitable status and overseen by a voluntary Board. It is tasked by the Canal Communities Local Drug and Alcohol Task Force (CCLDATF) with implementing a range of initiatives to address and respond to substance misuse and its causes and consequences within the Canal Communities area of Dublin, which consists of Bluebell, Inchicore, and Rialto.

CCRAS is now seeking interested candidates for a three-month contract as a Temporary Drug Education Worker (17.5 hours per week).

Location: Oblate Hall, Inchicore, Dublin 8

Contract: Temporary, 3-month contract to provide partial cover for maternity leave.

Salary: €477 per week (for 13 weeks at 17.5 hours per week); this is equivalent to an annual salary of €49,702 for a 35-hour week)

Purpose of the job

The overall purpose of the Drug Education Worker’s position is to co-ordinate, organise and deliver programmes, activities and events in the Canal Communities area (Bluebell, Inchicore, Rialto, Dublin 8) aimed at raising the local community’s awareness of issues relating to drug and alcohol use, and preventing the harmful use of drugs and alcohol locally. The job description for the full-time post is attached. For the period of this short-term contract, the worker will concentrate principally on several specific tasks:

  • Helping to organise the Canal Communities Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week which starts on the 18th of November 2024
  • Organising the publication and launch (during Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week) of a booklet on benzodiazepines, the contents of which are being finalised
  • Assisting in the development of the drug awareness ‘escape rooms’ initiated in the Canal Communities in 2023
  • Leading an advisory committee in planning a joint addiction-related training session for staff in the Canal Communities area, under the ‘CAN2’ initiative (see job description).

Candidate attributes and experience

Essential

  • Excellent inter-personal skills, in both one-to-one and group settings
  • Excellent facilitation skills
  • Level 7 qualification in community work, addiction studies, social sciences or other relevant discipline
  • Good knowledge of issues related to addiction and substance misuse
  • Experience of working in communities affected heavily by substance misuse
  • Report-writing, IT and presentation skills
  • Evidence of being able to work both on own initiative and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Youth work experience
  • Addiction studies qualification
  • Experience of inter-agency working
  • Knowledge of the Canal Communities area
  • Commitment to inter-agency working and to community participation in the design, delivery and evaluation of services
