The purpose of this job is to implement the objectives and programmes of Youth Work Ireland Tipperary and to work in partnership with the HSE, Tipperary County Council and other relevant services, to support the strategic development of Roma health work and respond to Roma health and housing needs in Tipperary

The Roma Health Support Youth Worker will:

  • Ensure the delivery of a quality service for Roma people and the development of integrated initiatives and responses to meet their needs;
  • Work with Roma residing in insecure or unsuitable housing to liaise with relevant services and supports to access suitable accommodation;
  • Advocate on behalf of the Roma people where language and literacy barriers may make it difficult for them to access essential mainstream services and social supports;
  • Enhance Roma access to health information and health services;
  • Signpost and make referrals to relevant services and agencies to ensure the needs of Roma people are being met;
  • Identify, enable and support action to address negative social determinants for Roma health, in order to improve their overall health status;
  • Build the capacity of Roma in Tipperary to encourage them to shape and participate in their local community;
  • Provide peer led support approaches to tackle prevalent issues that impact Roma people;
  • Provide outreach supports to Roma families in order to improve access, and engagement with, appropriate services and to provide them with relevant and up to date information
  • Ensure Project capacity to monitor and review progress, and ensure the ongoing sustainability of the Project;
  • Support the ongoing development of links between the formal and non-formal education sectors to enhance the educational opportunities available to Roma people;
  • Ensure the delivery of a quality service for Roma people using a community development approach and the development of integrated initiatives and responses to meet their needs
  • Participate in, and avail of, training and professional development opportunities;
  • Work as part of the staff team of Youth Work Ireland Tipperary. This will involve participating in planning sessions, meetings, reviews and helping with the running of the service in a collaborative way.

Additional information:

Support and guidance will be given on an on-going basis from the Chief Executive and other senior management. Individual supervision will be provided by the Staff Supervisor on a monthly basis. Staff members also have access to peer supervision, and external supervision. Training and personal progression is an important element of the role.

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum of QQI Level 7 Qualification
  • Full Clean Irish Driver’s License

Desirable:

  • A proficiency in a second European language

Hours of Work:

  • 14 hours per week. Evening work will be required.
