Youth Worker for the Children’s & Young People’s Programme

Southside Travellers is a community Development Organisation based in Sandyford, Dublin 18.
Southside Travellers envisions an Ireland where the human and civil rights, dignity, hopes and distinct cultural identity of Travellers is acknowledged and respected. The organisation seeks to play its part to realise this vision through the design, development and delivery of a series of integrated programmes which proactively respond to the needs of Travellers in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. The overall vision and direction of the organisation is overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors. All of our work is guided by the core principles of: Traveller leadership and participation, advocacy and equality, partnership and accountability. `

Children and Young Peoples’ Programme is committed to the personal and social development of Traveller children and young people resident in Dun Laoghaire – Rathdown.

The post

The post is a pivotal role, in supporting the delivery of the objectives of Southside Traveller’s Strategic Plan and the co-ordination, day-to-day management and ongoing development of all aspects of the Children and Young Peoples’ Programme.

This is a part time position, 25 hours per week with Southside Travellers Action Group

Main work locations; Sandyford and Church town.

One of Southside Travellers’ goals is to promote awareness, knowledge and uptake of a wide range of statutory, community and voluntary services amongst the Traveller community in DLR. Another is to increase Travellers’ development within our Children and Young Peoples’ Programme. The youth worker will support, develop and deliver our Children and Young Peoples’ Programme – including, specific and targeted afternoon, evening and weekend activities programmes. The youth worker will also take an active role in participating in team development with staff and other overall activities of the organisation.

Key responsibilities will include supporting the coordinator to:

  • Support and participate the objectives and goals of the Children’s & Young People’s Programme
  • Work with all staff in the youth team including CE participants and volunteers
  • Support and help organise and deliver a vibrant youth programme while addressing the needs of Traveller children and enhancing their culture through the work and activities of the programme objectives
  • Identify & engage young people who are members of the Traveller Community living in the Dun Laoghaire /Rathdown County
  • Plan, facilitate & evaluate programmes & interventions in response to young people’s needs
  • Encourage young people’s participation in the design & development of the programme and activities
  • Liaise with other projects & agencies to advocate for Traveller young people’s needs and raise awareness of Traveller Culture
  • Participate in outreach to engage with young people, their families & other agencies/services
  • Advocate on behalf of young people on all levels both national and local
  • Ensure all programme administration requirements are met and within the required timeframe and deadlines of the UBU funding criteria.
  • Keep accurate daily records and logs of all programme activities and prepare and deliver reports for the coordinator/Director
  • Participate in Supervision & any other meetings relevant and identified by management
  • Be guided and adhere to all policies especially Child Protection, Health & Safety & any other policies by Southside Travellers Action Group.
  • Participate and ensure all relevant training is completed.
  • Work evenings & weekends.
  • Carry out any reasonable duties as requested by Organisation Director.
  • Work from targeted work locations.

Candidates must have:

  • A minimum qualification of QQI Level 5 Award in Youth Work or Higher Certificate or equivalent qualification in related areas.
  • A minimum of 1 year relevant experience of working with young people.
  • An understanding of the issues facing young people from the Traveller Community are essential
  • Garda vetting will be required.

  • The successful candidate will be highly skilled, motivated, energetic and dynamic.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • A proven capacity to work with challenging children and young people, their families and communities.
  • An awareness and understanding of the issues affecting the Traveller community
  • An understanding of the principles of community development and social inclusion

Desirable

  • Full driving licence/D1
  • Own transport

In addition, the successful candidate will be willing to:

  • Work outside of normal office hours;
  • Be flexible and adapt to what is often a changing set of “goal posts” in response to the particular needs of particular young people
