The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2024- 2028 aims to tackle poverty and social exclusion at a local level through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

SICAP is co-funded by the Irish Government, through the Department of Rural and Community Development, and the European Social Fund Plus under the Employment, Inclusion, Skills, and Training (EIST) Programme 2021-2027.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER

SOCIAL INCLUSION AND COMMUNITY ACTIVATION PROGRAMME (SICAP) 2024-2028

Cork City Partnership is looking for an energetic and experienced Community Development Worker to facilitate strong community participation by leveraging the capacity within communities to make a difference grounded in the principles of empowerment, human rights, inclusion, social justice, self-determination and collective action.

Responsibilities:

  • Establishing contact with individuals and groups in local communities especially disadvantaged communities targeted under SICAP 2024 – 2028
  • Supporting local communities in collective action to address local issues and develop community initiatives.
  • Promoting social inclusion in local communities through effective use of community development principles and practice
  • Linking individuals and groups in disadvantaged communities to resources and supports available through state agencies and other service providers.
  • Promote integrated delivery of services through the various CCP Programmes to our clients.
  • Delivery of SICAP Annual Plan including management of dedicated budget
  • Co-ordination and delivery of specific area action plans.
  • Supporting local community groups to develop projects to address needs in disadvantaged areas of Cork city.
  • Organising and delivering supports and training to Local Community Groups.
  • Prepare funding/grant applications as required.
  • Participate in internal company committees to further the overall aims and objectives of the company.
  • Carry out all administrative tasks in support of your work.
  • The post-holder must be available to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

The above duties and responsibilities are not intended to be a complete list of all duties involved and consequently, the post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post which may be assigned to him/her from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office.

Experience/skills required.

  • At least two years’ experience of working with groups and individuals in a community setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of community development principles.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the impact of social exclusion and marginalisation.
  • Knowledge of the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP)
  • Experience and understanding of inter-agency work.
  • Experience and knowledge of sourcing funds and making funding applications.
  • Experience and understanding of group facilitation and group process.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and interpersonal).
  • Be able to demonstrate ability to engage with target groups in identifying their needs and assisting in the development of appropriate responses.
  • Be self-motivated, flexible and able to work on own initiative.
  • Experience of leading out projects, from planning, design and delivery.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills (e.g. report writing, record keeping and ability to work to deadlines).
  • Good networking skills.
  • Have a good level of I.T. skills.
  • Financial and budgetary skills.
  • Full drivers’ licence and access to personal transport.

Relevant qualification to the position.

  • It is desirable that the applicant hold a relevant qualification in some or any of the following: Community Development, Youth Work, Social Sciences, Education or a related field.
  • Where an applicant does not have a relevant qualification they must demonstrate substantial experience, knowledge, and ability in relation to the position on offer with at least two years on the ground experience.

Location of post – Cork City

This is a fulltime role, 35 hours per week.

Initial fixed term contract to 31st December 2025 which may be further extended subject to continued funding.
