Part Time Community Health & Well Being Primary Health Care, Accommodation Worker

Southside Travellers is a community Development Organisation based in Sandyford, Dublin 18.
Southside Travellers envisions an Ireland where the human and civil rights, dignity, hopes and distinct cultural identity of Travellers is acknowledged and respected. The organisation seeks to play its part to realise this vision through the design, development and delivery of a series of integrated programmes which proactively respond to the needs of Travellers in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. The overall vision and direction of the organisation is overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors. All of our work is guided by the core principles of: Traveller leadership and participation, advocacy and equality, partnership and accountability.

The post; Primary Health Care Programme, Accommodation Worker is part time position.

The position is funded by the HSE.

The post is a pivotal role, in supporting the delivery of the objectives of Southside Traveller’s Strategic Plan and the co-ordination, day-to-day management and ongoing development of all aspects of Southside Travellers Primary Health Care Programme with a specific role in Traveller Accommodation.

Qualifications: Third level education community development or health care; and/or three years work experience in a Primary Health Care Programme, Traveller organisation or Community Development Setting.

Candidates will ideally be educated to degree or post degree level or have equivalent experience.

The role requires significant skill and expertise in programme design & development, training, social inclusion, practice, and an innovative and creative approach to the design, development and delivery of real and meaningful services and supports for Travellers.
The ideal candidate will have clearly demonstrable leadership, interpersonal, influencing, networking and communication skills. S/he will have previous experience at a senior level in a similar sized organisation and a strong track record of work in/with the community development sector. S/he will also have a demonstrable commitment to equality and social change.

To this end, the Accommodation Worker will,

  • Develop and create a viable reporting system to capture the needs of travellers in the county address the needs and respond to Traveller accommodation needs in the county
  • Inforce policy and develop policy submissions on key issues with our membership and the wider Traveller community.
  • Support the national coordination of the ITM Accommodation Working Group and other national spaces.
  • Support local Traveller to respond to accommodation crises and issues affecting them
  • Support innovative ways of work that includes collaboration between Traveller organisations and other civil society and housing groups.
  • Working with local and national Traveller representatives on national Traveller accommodation advisory bodies.
  • Providing an evidence-based, inclusive research analysis to inform national and local Traveller accommodation policy.
  • Prepare inputs into the Department’s Traveller accommodation guidelines and documents as necessary.
  • Collaborate and work within the guidelines and objectives of the Primary Health Care Programme
  • Promote and enhance Traveller culture throughout all duties
  • Support the delivery of health programmes with and by Community Health workers
  • Support the development of Traveller men’s health activities

He/she will

  • Ensure effective management of the accommodation needs in the Primary Health Care Programme
  • Provide support and supervision to the primary health-care workers and participate in regular team meetings for information sharing, planning, review and evaluation
  • Develop annual work plans to improve the accommodation status of the Traveller Community in DLR
  • Proactively seek additional funding to carry out accommodation projects
  • Prepare monthly reports for the organisation’s Director and Board of Management as well as timely provision of Regional THU required reports/returns/applications/other required documentation
  • Attend regular management team meetings and work with other Programme Managers and their teams when needed
  • Devise and agree programme budgets with the Director
  • Participate in regional and national Traveller health networks
  • Support the development of inclusive local health services by providing inputs, training
  • Support the development of targeted initiatives to address the accommodation needs s of Travellers in partnership with other statutory, voluntary and community bodies
  • Represent Southside Travellers where appropriate on external bodies, e.g., community projects, inter-agency networks and liaise and network with people in relevant statutory and voluntary bodies
  • Undertake additional duties as may be required from time to time as assigned by Southside Travellers’ Director Ability to be proactive, use own initiative and work effectively within a pressurised environment.
  • Ability to be proactive, have good interpersonal skills, including ability to liaise with a wide range of contacts and build and maintain effective working relationships within the Traveller community and with stakeholders.
