Clonmel Community Mother Home Visitor (Part-time)

The Community Mother Programme is a Home Visiting service for families with children pre-birth to 5 years. Community Mothers visit parents in their home during the early years of their child’s life to support parents in the areas of child development, positive parent child relationships, Infant Mental Health, parenting and signposting parents to local services and supports. Community Mothers facilitate Mother & Baby/Parent & Toddler Groups, Ante-natal and post-natal workshops, Parenting Programmes e.g. Parent Plus, Circle of Security, Marteo Mao.

Our Community Mother Programme is part of the National Community Families project and is in the process of transitioning to Community Families over the coming months.

We are seeking a compassionate and self-motivated individual who will support parents in their role, understanding they are the experts of their children. You should have at least 2- 3 years’ experience in home visiting or a similar role, along with knowledge of child development, parenting strategies, child protection and local family supports.

Ideally, candidates should hold a minimum QQI Level 6 qualification in Childcare, Social Care or a related field. Strong communication and organisational skills are essential, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities.

  • To support parents of children pre-birth to 5 years through the provision of 1:1 home visiting. Offering information and support i.e. breastfeeding information, weaning, child development ages and stages, healthy eating, encouraging play etc.
  • Signposting and/or referral to relevant supports and services.
  • Engage in community wrap-around groups, including Mother & Baby, Parent & Toddler groups, Antenatal clinics.
  • Maintain records, through the CRM System, of home visits and other administrative activities supporting the work of the programme.
  • Vigilance in monitoring and responding to incidents in line with Children First and National Child Protection Guidelines.
  • Participate in regular team meetings as required.
  • Participate in regular supervision including reflective practice.
  • Attend all training relevant to the role of Home Visitor and continuing professional development.
  • Any other duties that the Community Mother Programme Manager may deem necessary.

Person Specification

  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working in the home visiting sector and/or a similar role.
  • Ideally hold a QQI Level 6 in childcare/social care or relevant qualification.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child development, best parent practices, healthy family structures, healthy eating, child protection and reporting, local community supports to families.
  • Ability to form professional, caring, non-judgemental relationships with families.
  • Ability to model positive parenting strategies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to interagency working.
  • Strong organisational skills, ability to organise and schedule visits.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Capacity to work with adaptability and sensitivity and to work flexible hours as required.
  • Ability to identify and appropriately address child protection concerns.
  • Capacity to self-motivate and work independently and in collaboration with our team and partner agencies.
  • A commitment to his/her own professional development.

Terms and Conditions

  • The appointment will be a fixed term contract for one year, including an initial probationary period of 6 months. Garda vetting will apply.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • A full clean driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Location: South Tipperary. Your place of work will be the Programme office with home visits to participating family homes.

Hours: 25 Hours per week, with a view to increased hours, subject to funding.
