GARDENER AT THE SANCTUARY
We are currently recruiting for a Gardener to join our team.
The Sanctuary is a meditation centre for social change in the heart of Dublin City. It is a charity founded by Sr. Stan Kennedy in 1998. The Sanctuary has evolved organically over the years to include a wide range of courses and programmes for people seeking a more meaningful life. These include mindfulness programmes for schools, programmes for carers and people working on the frontlines of society. Moreover, the Sanctuary offers tailored programmes for organisations, charities, workplace and management teams.
The Sanctuary Gardens have also evolved organically over time and in 2022 won an award in the Irish Landscape Institute Design Awards.
Role Description
As a Gardener, you will play a vital role in continuing to create beautiful outdoor spaces, improving the aesthetics of the gardens while maintaining its labyrinth and its biodiversity surrounds. If you are a driven and passionate individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, we encourage you to apply for this position.
This is a part-time position. Salary is €20-23k, commensurate with the experience, skill, and knowledge you bring.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop the hard and soft landscaping of the Sanctuary gardens, biodiversity field, labyrinth and water features.
- Implement and operate a seasonal sustainable maintenance plan for – planting, weeding, pruning, mowing, composting and watering.
- Monitor plant growth and adjust care as necessary ensuring that the gardens and grounds are always beautiful.
- Maintain an inventory of all tools and equipment used for gardening and landscaping, ensuring that they are in good condition.
- Ensure health and safety regulations and standards are adhered to.
- Participate in public and community engagement events when required.
- Liaise with the Managing Director re budgetary planning, regular updates and recommendations.
- In time, develop, lead and manage the role of garden volunteers and work closely with them.
Person Specification
- A minimum two years proven experience in a similar role i.e. community gardening / biodiversity. A QQI level would be an advantage.
- Excellent physical condition with ability to lift and move heavy objects and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
- Familiarity with plant identification and care as well as pest and disease control techniques.
- Play an essential role in creating beautiful outdoor spaces, improving the aesthetics of gardens and landscapes.
- Participate in educational outreach programmes, organise events such as gardening workshops.
- A valid drivers licence would also be an advantage.
