The Irish Traveller Movement (ITM) was founded in 1990 and is a national membership organisation representing Travellers and Traveller organisations across Ireland. ITM works collectively to represent the views of Travellers and Traveller organisations at a national and international level. We develop policies, and innovative ways to bring about change for Travellers in Ireland. One of our core principles is to challenge the racism that Travellers face in Ireland. We work to challenge the inequalities by promoting Traveller participation and leadership locally and nationally, by developing and sharing good practice, developing evidence-based research to inform our work and building strategic alliances with all who are committed to equality and human rights
ITM is seeking a Traveller youth membership officer to work with our members, young Travellers and stakeholders in the delivery of the ITM’s Traveller Youth Participation and Leadership Strategy
This Role Will Be:
- Build and maintain relationships with ITM members/young Travellers and support their participation in the implementation of the Traveller Youth Participation and leadership Strategy.
- Travel throughout Ireland to meet with our membership/young Travellers supporting and maintaining a strong grassroots movement
- Establish and coordinate a National Traveller Youth Working Group with ITM members
- Ensuring compliance with best practice in youth work and working young Travellers
- Help identify national policy with our membership/young Travellers to inform ITM’s National policy work in this area.
- Engage with ITM member organisations and other stakeholders to develop the ITM youth programme.
- Work alongside the National Traveller Youth Forum officer to implement ITM’s Traveller Youth and Participation Strategy.
- Support ITM members to be champions of Traveller children’s/Youth rights
- Seek opportunities to further develop the youth programme
- Represent ITM in relevant policy forums/events,
- Responding to inquiries, organising meetings, taking minutes, and other general administration
- To carry out other duties and actions as designated by the Coordinator of the National Traveller Youth Programme from time to time.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
A community development qualification or equivalent three year experience in working in the sector.
Personal Attributes
- Self-motivated, highly capable of working independently and with a strong work ethic.
- Strong empathetic nature, with a genuine passion for Travellers Human rights in Ireland.
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to problem solve, and find solutions.
- Experience working in a non-profit or membership-based organisation is an advantage.
- Strong facilitation skills
- Experience of CRM databases.
- Good written communications skills, including ability to draft summary and reports
- Good IT skills, including Word, Excel, Internet and PowerPoint.
Desirable Requirements
- Commitment to a Traveller Led Movement
- A good knowledge of Traveller culture and issues
- Experience of working with disadvantaged and marginalised groups
Note: As this work involves contact with young people, candidates under consideration for employment in this role will be subject to Garda vetting.
Salary: €36,000 €42.000 commensurate with experience.
Pension: Zurich life matched 5% PRSA contribution.
Contract and Work hours: Fixed-term contract until December 31 2025
Full time (35 hours per week).
Start Date: February 2025.
