Location: Tallaght, Dublin 24

Contract: Permanent and Part-time (33 hours per week)

Work days: Monday to Friday

Salary: €30,514 - €47,166 DOE (This is the pro-rated salary for 33 hours)

What does Barnardos Special Needs Service do?

Barnardos Special Needs Service provides a specialist early years’ service, which is family focused and community based.

Eligibility: Children under 6 years of age who live in the CDNT 8 geographical area and who have been accepted onto the HSE Children Network Disability Team C

Referral System: Children are referred through H.S.E Disability Network Team pathway.

How we work:

Once children/families are accepted into the service, Barnardos’ Quality and Assessment Framework is implemented. From this process child and family support needs are identified and interventions are put in place

The service works in close co-operation with HSE Disability Network Team which is also based in Chamber House

Special Needs Service is also part of the wider integrated range of Barnardos Services in Tallaght.

The aim of the service is to support children to reach their potential. The service offers time limited specific therapeutic interventions to children and families based on their assessed needs

Children / Families may access a package of services which may include:

  • Children’s group sessions in Chamber House – 12-week block of sessions 2 mornings per week or 2-hour afternoon session for children who are in other morning placement
  • 1:1 intervention with children
  • Parent - Child interventions
  • Group interventions with parents and children together
  • Pre-School support
  • Parental support, advice and advocacy
  • Supporting children, families and services in the transition of children to other appropriate services.

The staffing structure of the service is:

  • 1 Project Coordinator
  • 1 Project Worker
  • 1 Programme Support Worker
  • 1 Administrator

Job purpose

To develop and implement programmes that respond to the needs of young children and their parents referred to the service working in partnership with families, H.S.E. Disability Network Team and other organisational, community and voluntary bodies.

Commitment to the delivery of quality services to young children with additional needs, their families and carers.
 

  • Ability to act on own initiative and consult where appropriate.
  • Ability to work under pressure, make decisions in consultation with the line manager when appropriate.
  • To be committed to adhering to best practice in the work and be innovative and open to change.
  • Flexibility and adaptability are essential for this post.
  • Ability to form objective relationships with children, young people, families/carers, colleagues and other agencies.
  • Understanding of the needs of children under 6 with a disability and of their families is essential.

Experience

  • Experience of working with young children impacted by disability is essential.
  • A minimum of 2-years’ post-qualification experience of working with young children and their families is essential.
  • Experience of implementing interventions for both young children with additional needs and their parents / families is essential.
  • Experience of planning, implementing and reviewing programmes with children and/or families is essential.
  • Experience of working in partnership with other agencies is highly desirable

Qualifications

  • A recognised third level practice qualification [1] (minimum Level 7 on the NFQ) in one of the following:
    • Early Childhood Care and Education
    • Social Care
    • Education
    • Social Work
    • Or related discipline (Nursing, Psychology, and Early Years’ Education).

Note: this list can be varied depending on the specific requirements of the post.

A full driving licence with the use of a suitably insured car is required.
