You are invited to join DCU Age-Friendly online for an event on Intergenerational Fairness. Join us and make sure your voice is heard. This will impact future generations, and all ages are welcome to take part.
What is Intergenerational Fairness?
Intergenerational fairness is the principle that the actions and decisions of one generation should not unfairly burden or compromise the well-being and opportunities of future generations, emphasising the need to consider the interests and needs of both present and future generations, for example.
- Core Concept:
At its heart, intergenerational fairness is about ensuring a just and sustainable future for all, not just those alive today.
- Focus on Equity:
It emphasises the idea that current generations have a responsibility to enhance the conditions for future generations, avoiding actions that would jeopardise their prospects.
- Policy Implications:
This principle is increasingly being used to inform policy decisions across various sectors, including climate change, economic development, and resource management, to ensure that future generations are not left to deal with the consequences of our actions.
What sort of topics are important to consider?
- Climate Change: Addressing climate change is seen as a key example of an intergenerational issue, as the effects of current emissions will be felt by future generations.
- Resource Management: Ensuring sustainable use of natural resources is another area where intergenerational fairness is relevant, as future generations will need access to these resources.
- Economic Policies: Fiscal policies and investments that could burden future generations with debt or limit their opportunities are also seen as potentially violating the principle of intergenerational fairness.
EU Focus:
- The European Commission is actively working on incorporating intergenerational fairness into its policies and is developing a strategy on the topic.
Why should I engage?
- The European Commission is encouraging all citizens to share their ideas and perspectives on intergenerational fairness and working to strengthen communication between generations and ensure that the interests of present and future generations are respected throughout policy and law-making.
