Solas Project: Academic support for young person at leaving cert level - IRISH
Context of this role
Solas Project’s young people doing their leaving certificate are looking for academic support. Statistics show that young people from the demographic in which we work are disproportionately at risk of leaving school early or giving up on their education.
Your role
Would you be willing to take on the role of supporting one of these 6th year students with their school work? This is mainly a time to sit with them and point them in the right direction, encouraging and motivating them. It might involve keeping an eye on deadlines, providing accountability and proof-reading homework. Consistency from you would be key in this role.
What are we looking for?
An Irish speaker or someone who enjoyed Irish in school and feels they can support at leaving cert level. Listening skills, empathy, a personable approach, commitment to showing up for the young person, patience, and maturity. It may take time to build a trusting relationship. Adaptability – we will do our best to work around our youth work team, our young people and your schedules. We need you to adhere to Solas Project’s policies including our Child Protection Policy.
What will I gain?
This is a good opportunity to a engage with young people and support them to get to grips with, and possibly even start to enjoy a leaving cert subject they find more challenging. You’ll receive support and advice from our staff youth workers. You’ll gain the experience of being a positive influence in the life of a young person and you may be the catalyst that allows this young person to reach their potential. Join us in working towards creating a more inclusive, equal society.
Practicalities
So far, our tutoring spaces have been open on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Solas Project has a dedicated youth work team who run regular weekly programmes for young people in the area so they will already have a relationship with the young person, and you will receive their full support. You’ll be working with a small group or one to one in a Solas Project designated space.
Time Commitment: 2 hours weekly.
