FASD Ireland launches General Election Manifesto
FASD Ireland have today launched their manifesto for the 2024 General Election.
The manifesto details 7 detailed recommendations in two sections; public policy recommendations and financial recommendations.
Speaking from their Headquarters in Ennis, County Clare, CEO of FASD Ireland, Tristan Casson-Rennie said; “I am proud to present our first election manifesto, which outlines our vision for a society that fully supports people with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This document is a call to action, offering a roadmap for a future where every individual can thrive.”
“FASD is a complex and often misunderstood condition affecting many thousands of people across Ireland. Our priority is establishing standard criteria for diagnosis and support, including a new Clinical Lead for FASD within the HSE. Currently, inconsistent diagnosis leads to disparities in access. Clear, evidence-based guidelines will ensure timely and appropriate support at any age.”
He continued; “We propose a Public Health (Display of Information at Point of Sale) Bill to raise awareness about alcohol risks before conception and during pregnancy. This legislation mandates clear information at points of sale, fostering a culture of responsibility to reduce FASD prevalence. Additionally, we advocate for a Finance (Ringfenced Alcohol Related Harm Fund) Bill dedicated to resources for prevention, education, diagnostics, and support services.
This fund will ensure sustainable support, reducing the costs of undiagnosed FASD. Education and care planning are essential for children and young adults with FASD. Legally enforceable Education, Health, and Care Plans will provide tailored support, promoting safeguarding and better outcomes in education and social integration through to age 25.”
He concluded; “Together, these proposals represent a comprehensive approach to FASD support in Ireland. Join us in advocating for these changes, creating a society that acknowledges FASD challenges while embracing the potential of every individual.”
