What is Liberate’s Transition youth work programme?

This is a programme for 12 to 14-year-olds to help them transition from our After Schools programme in Solas Project into our youth work programmes adopting a more youth work centred approach. In After Schools the children may have been daily participants from 5 years of age upwards. It’s transitioning them from a handheld approach to fostering independence with increased freedom and responsibility.

Your Role

Your role will be to help young people with their homework, make food with them, play games, chat, encourage positive behaviour and support any specific issue-based work (e.g. drugs awareness). You will spend time chatting, listening, asking questions, engaging in activities and games. You will provide a consistent reliable role model for them. You might attend trips out of school season or at midterms.

What are we looking for?

A positive outlook on life, understanding of adolescence and a patient person. A keen interest in working with young people is necessary as well as a sense of humour, empathy, a personable approach, commitment to showing up for the young people and not expecting anything in return. We need you to adhere to Solas Project’s policies including our Child Protection Policy and code of behaviour for volunteers. This involves attending training and team meetings.

What will I gain?

Connection with young people, the opportunity to share skills, model positive behaviour and attitudes and to expose young people to difference, opportunity etc. You’ll be part of a team. There will be always a staff member available for advice and practical guidance. This is a rewarding experience of getting to be a positive influence in the life of young people growing up in challenging circumstances. It’s a great opportunity to help us work towards creating a more inclusive, equal society.

Practicalities

The transition group runs Mondays and Wednesday 2-5pm term time at Windmill View House, Oliver Bond Street, Dublin 8, D08PK82. Only 10 minutes’ walk from Christchurch cathedral, and 5 minutes from Merchant’s Quay.

Time Commitment: We ask that you commit one afternoon per week for the minimum of one academic year which is September – May.
