We are looking for volunteer members, specific goals are fundraising, community building, direct supports to students (showing them around, preparing for new arrival).

Background Information

Founded in January 2024, Fáilte Cork: A Higher Education Community Sponsorship Group works to raise funds to provide a weekly stipend and other resettlement costs, as well as 15 months of wrap around supports to incoming students from a refugee background on Education Pathways studying at UCC. We work directly with Nasc, The Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre as part of a larger programme.

We welcomed our first student in September 2024 and will be finding out details of our next incoming scholarship student in the coming weeks. We are working towards raising enough funds to extend the programme to two places per year in the future.

The Education Pathway post-graduate scholarships are offered to eligible people with refugee status currently residing in Uganda. Uganda has the largest refugee population in Africa, due to its relative stability and proximity to conflict zones in neighbouring countries. As a refugee in Uganda, you have no legal right to work, and opportunities are very limited. As part of the wider Education Pathways Ireland programme, which is a UNHCR initiative, Ireland has welcomed seven students with vital skills to resettle here as a third country since 2023.
