Workshop: Supporting Adults with Intellectual Disabilities in Bereavement & Loss
Date/Time: Thursday, May 30, 2024, 9:15 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Location: Online
Description:
This Irish Hospice Foundation Bereavement Workshop focuses on the impact of bereavement and additional losses for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities through an exploration of the relevant psychological models. We will look at the past and current understandings of grief and loss and how these have evolved over time; the unique ways in which grief can present for such individual while acknowledging the universality of loss.
Attendees will learn practical ways they can support the person during this process, as well as signs that the individual is struggling to cope. Attendees will also be invited to reflect on their own experiences of loss and how these may interact or colour the ways in which they support others.
Presenter: Dr John Smyth, Senior Clinical Psychologist working in a Voluntary body which supports individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in south Dublin
Cost: €100
