Barretstown serves children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses. Barretstown celebrates 30 years this year, having served over 125,000 campers since 1994. Barretstown offers free life-changing therapeutic programmes at our unique specially designed campus in County Kildare and through Outreach Programmes in schools, hospitals, and community settings throughout Ireland and the UK, for children and their families living with a serious illness.

We are recruiting for a Hospital Outreach Team Leader, who will be responsible for the planning and delivery of Barretstown’s Hospital Outreach Programme in the Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Network. Reporting to the Outreach Manager, they will take a lead role in planning and delivering therapeutic programming, as well coordinating the team of Hospital Outreach Specialists, volunteers and placement students.

The role of the Hospital Outreach Team Leader will be predominantly based in the hospital setting (Dublin area) and may also involve travel to support our satellite programmes within Ireland and the UK. This is a full-time role, based on a 37.5 hours per week, permanent contract.

Responsibilities Specific to the Post:

  • Take a lead role in the design, development and implementation of the Hospital Outreach Programme in the Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Network.
  • Coordinate and facilitate programme delivery to children and families in clinic and ward settings.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Outreach Team to cultivate and nurture a positive team working environment to continue a high delivery of service
  • Provide training and support to the Hospital Outreach staff team, as well as volunteers and placement students.
    • Manage logistical and administrative requirements for programme delivery including: Sourcing and purchasing of programme supplies
    • Overseeing staff/volunteer rostering in clinical areas
    • Tracking and reporting of programme statistics
    • Budgeting and management of expenses
  • Continue to build positive working relationships with hospitals and facilitate growth of the Barretstown Outreach Programme.
  • Use feedback gathered from families and multidisciplinary teams within the hospital to inform ongoing programme development.
  • Support with the development and facilitation of additional Outreach programmes where required, including Community Programmes and Schools Education Programmes.
  • Act as an ambassador for Barretstown, forging connections in the hospital setting, to support our residential programmes as well as our Outreach programmes, and signposting families to the various programmes offered by Barretstown.
  • Take a lead role in ensuring staff and volunteers are acting in accordance with all relevant safeguarding and child protection policies, as well as standard operating procedures required in the clinical context.
  • The responsibilities of this role may evolve to meet the needs of our continually developing service.

Requirements/ Experience:

  • Ability to work in line with Barretstown’s core values and mission at all times.
  • Previous experience or exposure in a hospital, school or community environment
  • Understanding of childcare and age-appropriate activity engagement.
  • Whilst this role is predominantly based in Dublin, it may require some travel within Ireland and the UK to different hospital/ community settings where required.
  • Five Days over Seven, predominately Monday to Friday with flexibility required for occasional evening and weekend work.

  • Continually strives to improve and proactively makes recommendations for developing the service.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a Team Lead or previous Team Lead/Supervisory experience
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently as well as being a strong team player
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is personally committed and motivated for this role.
  • Driving license is preferred, but not essential.
