Barretstown offers free life-changing therapeutic programmes at our unique specially designed campus in County Kildare and through Outreach Programmes in schools, hospitals, and community settings throughout Ireland and the UK, for children and their families living with a serious illness.

We are recruiting for a Hospital Outreach Specialist, to support the planning and delivery of Barretstown’s Hospital Outreach programme in The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Reporting to the Outreach Team Lead, they will deliver therapeutic programming, and assist in the coordination of programme volunteers and placement students.

The role of the Hospital Outreach Specialist will be predominantly based in the hospital setting (Belfast area) delivering the Hospital Outreach Programme (HOP). This will involve facilitating a range of activities and games to children awaiting clinic appointments, as well as bedside visits to children who are in-patients in hospital. This is a full-time role, based on a 37.5 hour week, 3 year fixed term contract.

Responsibilities Specific to the Post:

  • Assist in the design, development and implementation of the Hospital Outreach Programme in Belfast.
  • Assist the Team Lead in coordinating, training and supporting volunteers and placement students.
  • Fulfil logistical and administrative requirements for programme delivery including documentation requirements for hospitals, record-keeping, sourcing and organising of programme supplies, and petty cash management.
  • Continue to build positive working relationships with hospitals and facilitate growth of the Barretstown Outreach Programme within Northern Ireland.
  • Use feedback gathered from families and multidisciplinary teams within the hospital to inform continuous programme development.
  • Support with the development and facilitation of additional Outreach programmes where required, including Community Programmes and Schools Education Programme.
  • Act as an ambassador for Barretstown, forging connections in the hospital setting, to support our residential programmes as well as our Outreach programmes, and signposting families to the various programmes offered by Barretstown.

Requirements/ Experience:

  • Ability to always work in line with Barretstown’s core values and mission.
  • Barretstown camp programme experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Understands the challenges of working in a hospital, school, and community environment.
  • Understanding of childcare and age-appropriate activity engagement.
  • Whilst this role is predominantly based in Belfast, it may require some travel within Ireland and the UK to different hospital/ community settings where required.
  • Flexibility with working days and hours is required as this role may involve evening and weekend work.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is personally committed and motivated for this role. • A driving license is preferred, but not essential.
